Getting started
Do I need an account?
No. The editor and every export work without signing up. You need an account to save gradients, post to the community gallery and vote.
How do I make my first gradient?
Open the editor and pick a style on the Design tab, or open Presets on the Settings tab for a ready-made start. Drag the color points on the canvas to move them, click a color in the sidebar to change it, and press Space to pause or play. When you like it, click Export.
What are styles?
A style decides how your colors are drawn: soft blobs, aurora curtains, neon ribbons, liquid chrome, a synthwave grid and more. There are 15, and each one has its own controls. The four newest (Lava Lamp, Liquid Chrome, Holographic and Retro Grid) export on Pro only until November 20, 2026, then they are free for everyone. Anyone can design with them now. See them all.
What is a finish?
A finish goes over the whole design, every layer at once. There are four: film grain, fluted glass (like looking through ribbed glass), dither (fewer colors in a pixel pattern, or halftone dots) and blur. Find them under Finish on the Design tab. They work with every style and show in PNG, MP4, the HTML embed and share images. The CSS and GLSL exports leave them out.
How do layers work?
Each layer has its own style, colors, opacity and blend mode (Normal, Screen, Lighter, Multiply, Overlay or Soft Light). Stack up to 8 on the Layers tab. A common recipe is a soft Mesh Blob base with a Neon Flow layer on top set to Screen.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Yes. Space plays or pauses the animation, R gives you new random colors, Cmd+Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows) undoes and Shift+Cmd+Z (Ctrl+Y) redoes, Delete removes the selected color, F shows the frame rate, Cmd+S (Ctrl+S) saves, and Cmd+E (Ctrl+E) opens Export. Double-click the canvas to add a color at that spot.
Will I lose my design if I close the tab?
No. The editor keeps your latest design on this device and brings it back the next time you open it, saved or not. Choose Start new on the message that appears if you want a blank slate. To get it on another device, save it to your account (Pro) or copy a link with the share button.
Can I use the colors from my logo or a photo?
Yes. Under Colors on the Design tab, click From image and pick a file. The editor finds its main colors and applies them to the current layer. The image never leaves your device.
How do I change the size or shape?
Pick a shape under Canvas on the Settings tab: 16:9, 1:1, 4:3 or 9:16, or a ready-made size for an Instagram post, a Story or Reel, a YouTube thumbnail, or a phone or desktop wallpaper. For those, the 2x PNG comes out at the exact size the network or device wants, for example 1080×1350 for an Instagram post.
Exporting
Which export should I use?
For a still image, use PNG. For an animated background on a website, use the HTML embed. For Reels, TikTok, slides or video editing, use MP4. CSS is a quick static fallback, and GLSL is shader code for developers using WebGL or Three.js.
How do I put the animated embed on my website?
Click Export, open the Code tab, pick HTML Embed and click Copy. Paste it into an HTML or custom code block on your site, and give that block a height (the gradient fills whatever box it sits in). Step-by-step for Webflow, Framer, WordPress and others.
Will the embed slow my site down?
It is a single small script with no libraries to download. It pauses when it scrolls out of view, and it shows a still frame to visitors who turn on reduced motion in their system settings. You can put more than one on the same page.
How long can videos be?
Free videos run up to 5 seconds at 720p with a small watermark. Pro videos run up to 30 seconds at up to 4K with no watermark. Video is rendered frame by frame in your browser, so it is smooth even on a slow computer.
Video export says my browser is not supported.
Video export uses a browser feature called WebCodecs. It works in recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. Update your browser, or try Chrome. Very large sizes, like 4K, can fail on some phones; pick a smaller size if that happens.
Why does the CSS export look different?
CSS can only layer simple radial gradients, so it is an approximation. It is closest for a Mesh Blob with two to four colors, and it does not animate or carry a finish. For anything else, use the HTML embed or a PNG.
Can I use what I make in commercial work?
Yes. You own the gradients you make, and everything you export is yours to use in personal and commercial work. The terms have the details.
Saving and sharing
How do I save a gradient?
Saving is part of Pro. Every new account gets 7 days of Pro free, so you can save during your first week. Gradients you save then stay in My Gradients after the trial, and you can still open and edit them.
How do I post to the community gallery?
Sign in, then click Post to gallery in the editor. Give it a name and a few tags. It is free, and you do not need to save the gradient first. Other people can then open a copy and remix it.
Can I keep my gradients private?
Yes, with Pro. Private gradients only open for you. Anything you made private during your trial stays private after it ends; making another gradient private needs Pro.
Plans and billing
What do I get with Pro?
Video up to 30 seconds at 4K with no watermark, embeds without the credit link, 4x PNG, GLSL shader export, unlimited saved gradients, private gradients, and new styles two weeks before the free plan. Compare plans.
How much is Pro?
$8 a month, $60 a year, or $49 once for Pro Lifetime. Prices are in US dollars.
How does the free trial work?
Every new account gets 7 days of Pro, with no card needed. We email you once before it ends. When it ends, your account moves to the free plan on its own. Nothing is charged.
What does Pro Lifetime mean?
You pay once and keep Pro on that account for as long as Mesh Gradient Studio runs. It never renews, and there is nothing to cancel.
How do I cancel?
Go to Account and click Manage subscription. That opens Stripe, where you can cancel. Pro stays on until the end of the period you paid for.
Can I get a refund?
Email hello@meshgradientstudio.com from the address on your account and tell us what happened. We look at every request.
I paid but Pro is not on.
Pro usually switches on within a minute of returning from checkout. Refresh the page, and make sure you are signed in with the same email you paid with. If it is still off, email hello@meshgradientstudio.com and we will sort it out.
Account and troubleshooting
The canvas is blank or black.
The editor needs WebGL, which almost every modern browser has. Turn on hardware acceleration in your browser settings, update the browser, or try Chrome. Some locked-down work computers block WebGL.
The editor feels slow.
Lower the quality setting at the bottom right of the canvas (1x is fastest), or use fewer layers. Neon Flow with many ribbons and particles is the heaviest style.
I forgot my password.
On the sign-in page, click Forgot your password? and we will email you a reset link. If you signed up with Google, sign in with Google instead.
How do I delete my account?
Email hello@meshgradientstudio.com from the address on your account and we will delete it along with your saved gradients.
